Gareth Gale has been playing drums and percussion almost all his life. He is arguably one of South Africa’s most respected homegrown talents, with a near-tangible passion for the art and science of drumming.
Having completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music at UKZN, Gareth has spent the last decade performing alongside some of South Africa’s most reputable artists. His proficiency and passion for a variety of styles have made him a sought-after session drummer, having recorded albums for a number of prominent South African musicians.
Gareth’s career has taken him to premier arts destinations around the world, from the House of Blues in Los Angeles and the Living Room in New York, to the famed Troubadour in London and Le Zebra in Paris to name a few. As Gareth’s performance career has grown, he has opened for artists such as Pharrell, and performed internationally alongside Hugh Masekela, Johnny Clegg, and Freshlyground.
More recently, Gareth’s drumming can be heard on the newly released Guy Buttery album, where he is featured alongside Vusi Mahlesela, David Jenkins and Nibs van der Spuy to name a few.
On their recent tour to the Western Cape, Guy and Gareth won the Standard Bank Silver Ovation award at the Grahamstown festival for their duet performance.
Gareth is passionate about developing drummers and musicians, opening his own Drum School ‘Gareth Gale Drumming’ in 2009. He has since written and published his own range of educational books, ‘Starting Out and Moving Forward’ which aim to both inspire and educate drummers throughout South Africa.
Gareth is very excited to be working on staff at Crawford La Lucia and to be learning from such a highly-skilled and dynamic team.
